The Leeds
Caledonian Society was founded in 1894, having as its first President,
Alderman Peter Gibson JP who was
also Mayor of Leeds. The Society has continued uninterrupted since then
with the role of President being held by a succession of outstanding
men and women, and supported by the Vice-President and the Council.
The Logo
shows the St Andrew's Cross, the fleece from the City of Leeds Coat
of Arms, a hint of heather, and topped with a Scottish Thistle.
Although
the Objectives of the Society were three-fold:
Benevolent - to
afford assistance, when necessary, to its members; to assist in providing
for the upbringing and education of the children of deceased members;
and generally to render assistance to deserving Scotsmen or their
families, as determined by the Society.
Social - to promote friendly intercourse
and good fellowship among Scotsmen resident in Leeds and district.
Literary - to promote the reading and
study of the works of Scottish and other authors, and hold concerts,
readings, and discussions with this view.
the main purpose of the
Society nowadays is friendship, social events and raising money for
charity.
